Lebanese Government capitulates to Hezbollah while Arab league mediates truce
comment by Jerry Gordon
My Lebanese friends in the 14th March movement are vitally concerned about yesterday’s capitulation by the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. This despite the ’sharp’ criticism of Iran by Saudi Arabia, a prelude to President Bush’s visit in Riyadh with King Abdullah, tomorrow. So much for the Sunni Arab ummah coming to the aid of fellow member of the Arab League. The Hezbollah coup has virtually succeeded in extending the Shia Crescent from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea under the Iranian-Syrian axis.
Witness these comments from the Ynet.News.com report. Lebanese Government’s decisions that caused violent uprising repealed in effort to placate Hezbollah. Celebratory firing of weapons resounds through capital. The Hezbollah network Al-Manar reported the government’s decision, which was accompanied by celebratory firing of weapons. “This decision will have numerous ramifications,” the newscaster said, reading from a statement. “Despite the fact that both of the government’s decisions were used as an excuse for violence and use of weapons, and stressing that we are opposed to the use of armed violence for the achievement of political objectives, the government has decided to cancel both of its decisions.”
This evening Beirut Time, the Secretary General of the Arab League , Amr Moussa announced “a deal to end the violence”. YnetNews noted:
Arab League says warring parties in Lebanon agree to lay down weapons, Beirut airport reopens for business week after being closed. Hezbollah: We want to return to a settlement which leads, in the end, to there being neither victor nor vanquished.
This is a fig leaf, that will permit Hezbollah to improve its position to control the Lebanese government and its armed forces. It is a signal defeat for the US-backed regime in Beirut. Discussions between Bush and King Abdullah at the latter’s horse ranch outside Riyadh are likely to go nowhere regarding these developments and the Israel Palestinian peace process. Ditto for Bush’s meeting with Egypt’s President Mubarak this weekend, whose Intelligence chief Suleiman has a failed ‘cease fire’ agreement with Hamas in Gaza. Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorists continue to rocket Israel southern cities like Ashkelon and towns in the western Negev with rockets and mortars. Yesterday’s rocket attack in Ashkelon hit a mall injuring 15 people.

Lebanese Information Minister Ghazi al-Aridi said in a press statement on Wednesday that the US-backed cabinet has canceled two measures it took against Hizbullah, which triggered the worst internal fighting in the country since the 1975-90 civil war.
Fierce battles between Sunni supporters of Western-backed government, members of Alawite sect loyal to Hizbullah rage in Tripoli as opposition says it is ending its takeover of west of capital. Official says thousands fleeing, several people wounded
The two measures in question were the army’s decision to overturn a government act to reassign the head of Beirut airport security, and the decision to probe a communications network set up by Hizbullah.
The government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said after a meeting that it was taking the step to preserve civil peace and facilitate an Arab League mediation effort to end Lebanon’s 18-month old political crisis, which has left the country without a president since November.

Lebanese media reported that the decision to repeal the acts was instated despite Saudi Arabia’s request that the government refrain from ceding to Hizbullah. The organization demanded that the decisions be revoked in exchange for removing the siege from the nation’s airport and for halting the revolt it had declared.
At least 81 people were killed since the violence erupted one week ago, in a revolt that saw Hizbullah seize control of many parts of Lebanon’s capital Beirut.
